Coast is a Portland company that sells mostly through hardware stores, which is why their lights get less attention online than they deserve and why the lineup is confusing. Thirteen models covered here, three battery architectures, and two of them are now discontinued.
Here is what to buy, what to avoid, and what to do if you own something Coast has quietly dropped.
Best overall: Coast XPH34R headlamp
$89.99. 2,700 lumens, 295 meters, 6.75 hours on high, 25 hours on low, 6.42 ounces for the head unit.
Coast raised this from 2,075 to 2,700 lumens without renaming the model, so half the reviews online quote the old figure. At 2,700 lumens it is putting out more light than most handhelds in this guide, from something strapped to your forehead.
The rechargeable ZX955 pack is included, and it falls back to three AAAs when the pack dies. That combination is the single most useful pattern in Coast’s catalog and it is worth paying for.

Best lumens per dollar: Coast GX30
$38.99. 2,300 lumens, 268 meters, IP67, 30 hours on low.
IP67 at this price is unusual, and 30 hours of low-mode runtime is what six AA cells buy you. The catch is the weight, 12.91 ounces and 8.2 inches, so this is a truck or a duty belt light, not a pocket light.
The rechargeable ZX866 pack is sold separately, which Coast is not upfront about. Out of the box this is an alkaline light.

Best pocket light: Coast HX5R
$38.99. 800 lumens, 200 meters, 3.81 ounces, 4.96 inches.
The sleeper of the lineup. It runs Coast’s Z555 rechargeable pack through a built-in charge port, and it also runs a single AA. Having onboard charging and disposable-cell fallback in the same 3.81 ounce body is genuinely rare, and it means the light works whether you planned ahead or not.
Five hours at 500 lumens is a working runtime, not a burst.

Best sealed EDC: Coast Slayer
$84.99. 1,150 lumens on turbo, 130 meters, IP67, 3.32 ounces, USB-C, charges in under two hours.
Flat pocket format with separate flood and spot optics. IP67 and USB-C put it a tier above most of the catalog for weather and convenience, and it is the second-lightest light here.
The tradeoff is a sealed battery. When the cell degrades, the light is done. That is the deal with every built-in-battery light and it is worth knowing before you spend $85.

Cheapest useful light: Coast G70
$44.99, frequently discounted to $19.99. 1,750 lumens, 285 meters, up to 20 hours.
Six AAs, no rechargeable option, no per-mode runtime published. It is a plain aluminum tube that throws 285 meters. At sale price it is the most light per dollar Coast sells and it makes the G26 pointless.

Skip these
Coast HP3R, $87.99. 500 lumens, 89 meters, 1.5 hours on high, IP54, in a penlight. That is more money than the XPH34R commands on sale, for a fifth of the output and a third of the reach. Coast lists this price on two page variants so it is not a typo, but nothing about the specs supports it.
Coast G26, $21.99. 415 lumens, 134 meters. The G70 does 1,750 lumens and 285 meters and regularly sells for less. There is no scenario where the G26 is the right pick.
Coast HX4 original, $14.99. Not bad, just obsolete. The HX4 V2 is $16.99 and does 120 lumens, 15 meters and 7.75 hours against the original’s 80 lumens, 13 meters and 3.75 hours. Two dollars for fifty percent more output.
Discontinued: what to do if you own one
Polysteel 700. Coast marks it discontinued on their own product page and the spec table no longer renders. The surviving Polysteel line runs 100 through 600 plus the Polysteel 60 headlamp. The Polysteel 600 at $24.99 does 1,000 lumens and 38 hours and is the closest replacement, at roughly half the 700’s old price.
HP7R. Removed from coastportland.com entirely. Only a tail cap and a wall mount survive as accessories, and the non-rechargeable HP7 is itself marked discontinued. Street pricing is still $90 to $120 on remaining stock, which is a lot for 300 lumens in 2026.
Coast has no direct successor. The HX5R is the nearest rechargeable dual-power equivalent and beats the HP7R on every published number for $38.99. If your HP7R still works, keep using it. Do not pay $120 to replace one.
The three battery systems, and why it matters
Coast advertises most of the catalog as rechargeable. Three different things hide behind that word.
Sealed built-in. G55R and Slayer. USB-C, IP67, no cell swap ever. Best sealing in the lineup and a hard stop when the battery ages out.
Dual power, pack included. XPH34R, XPH30R, HP3R, HX5R. A proprietary ZITHION or Z-series pack plus a disposable-cell fallback. This is the pattern worth paying for and the reason the XPH34R and HX5R lead this guide.
Dual power, pack sold separately. GX30, PM300, G26. These ship alkaline-only. The rechargeability is an upsell, not something in the box. Budget another purchase if that is why you bought.
Worth noting: there is no removable 18650 anywhere in Coast’s lineup. Every rechargeable model is a proprietary pack or a sealed cell. If standard cells matter to you, this is the wrong brand.
